It’s another installment of what will hopefully be many monthly letters written to our children. It’s a part of a memory-keeping attempt to capture these glimpses into the everyday and the not so ordinary moments that pass by so quickly as children grow. This is an ongoing series.
My amazing boy –
What a summer it has been! We’ve gone through almost two and a half tubes of sunscreen. A summer well done, if I say so! I’m writing to you as we sit in the breeze on our favorite campsite on Alton Lake in the Boundary Waters. I have been so impressed with you on all of our journeys this summer. You have hiked many miles, you have splashed in freezing lakes, you have camped until the dirt on your hands has seemed like it’s permanent. You have run with wild glee on sand dunes, you have paddled remote lakes, and taken the lead on tricky portage paths. You have shown your sister how to tackle the amazing adventures of this world with joy and wonder.
Now, in a couple of weeks, you start your next year of preschool, and your excitement is incredible. I couldn’t be more proud and happy to be your mama.
I love you
So, so much,
Mama
Sweet little stinker bug –
As I sit to write this to you, you are sleeping in our tent as the waves lap the shoreline of our campsite. The trees sway in the breeze and we can smell the pines. This summer was a full fledged dunk into how we like to do summer the best. Splash pads, sprinklers, hikes, the cabin, BBQs with friends, road trips and plenty of time in the woods. We are lucky to have time to really get out and explore.
You did so well on our camping road trip – rolling with all the oddities and unpredictability that comes with it. You even managed to take a snooze on our shipwreck boat tour!
Now, here you are with us on your very first Boundary Waters trip. You are the masthead of our canoe and the inspiration for our paddling songs. Your good cheer and adaptability are so amazing. We will start some ECFE classes this fall, and I think you are just going to flourish.
I love you, little one.
So, so much,
Mama
