Letters to our child | May 2016

It’s another installment of what will hopefully be many monthly letters written to my son. It’s a part of a memory-keeping attempt to capture these glimpses into the everyday and the not so ordinary moments that pass by so quickly as children grow. This is an ongoing series.

My dear heart,

You love your trains, your trucks, your cars, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, tractors, combines, forklifts, engines, boxcars, I could go on and on and on. It’s certainly very possible that you know more about large machinery, at just over two, than I do at a few years older than you. Your enthusiasm for seeing how these different vehicles move and work, and then mimicking that in your play is both fascinating and contagious. We moved your trains downstairs recently, and we spend so much time building and rebuilding tracks in seemingly endless combinations. I even find myself wishing we had another set to make the longest track in the world.

When we’re not playing trains, we spend an awful lot of time out on the driveway, or, as you’ve dubbed it, in Gustown. Up and down, on the tricycle, with the chalk, through the bushes, and taking a detour into the grass. You always swing by to check on the little side garden and pull a few tiny violet heads, proudly bringing them back to me, placing them in my hand with your still-a-little-chubby fingers.

You’re getting to be so much a kid now, and it totally shows in everything you do and in almost every image and video I take. I’d say to you, “slow down,” but you are blossoming into so much of you that I can do nothing more than cheer you on with every ounce of my being.

So, so much,
Mama
